Friday News ::::: Week of November 10th

Friday News Header

1.  Philae

As a space geek, I’ve been earnestly following the story this week of the ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft and her approach to Comet 67P. And when the Philae lander finally succeeded in touching down, it was amazing.

XKCD even put together a “live comic” for the event. Fantastic.

2. Serial

I haven’t written about this yet, but I’m one of the thousands of people hooked on the Serial podcast. It’s a compelling investigative effort that doubles as an exciting, almost narrative podcast. It reminds me a bit of Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” in that the journalists aren’t shy about imposing themselves into the people related to the case. If you haven’t dived in yet, GO!

3. Movie News

Over the last week there’s been some interesting movie news coming across the wire.

Pixar has officially announced that they will make a Toy Story 4 and it will be co-written by Rashida Jones. At this point, I’m against the idea. The Toy Story Trilogy is one of the few almost-perfect trilogies in film. Perfectly bracketed storytelling. But in Hollywood, if it ain’t broke, fix it until it is.

– Now for something I’m completely in favor of: it seems that Christoph Waltz has joined the new James Bond film, probably as a villain. He’s just so good and this is a perfect turn for him.

– Oh, also last week the new Star Wars film announced the title with be Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I like it just fine. Certainly better than the prequel names. Time to parse out possible storylines from three words!

4. Tim Burton Art

I ran across these cool art prints based on characters from Tim Burton movies. Pretty cool treatments.

5. PointerGate

Over the last couple of weeks, Minneapolis social media has been buzzing about a KSTP report which criticized Mayor Betsy Hodges for a photo in which (they say) she flashes a gang sign with a convicted felon. This questionable reporting led to a firestorm which made it all the way… to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. We’re (in)famous!
