The new Smurfs movie is really moving along now! In fact, they just released the first official plot synopsis:
When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours – in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.
I’d just like to point out that I predicted this exact plot back in June of 2008! Here’s my take:
I can already see the script before they even write it: The Smurfs are somehow forced from their village (perhaps by Gargamel himself) and end up in a human city. They are forced to find some kind of MacGuffin while interacting with humans. The various Smurfs find their elements (e.g. Brainy Smurf visits a college and ends up giving some kind of lecture, Vanity Smurf [who is strongly implied to be gay] finds a salon, etc.) along the way. Some token human befriends the Smurfs (this is the Jason Lee character) and helps them. Lots of human men inexplicably fall for Smurfette. Blah blah blah. In the end the Smurfs are able to return to the villiage, but many have to make some big decision to do so because they like the city. Blah blah blah The End!
Yes friends, these movies write themselves. The sad thing is, I’m planning on seeing it just because it’s a Smurfs movie.
