I just want to say again that the music they play on KDWB is the worst music I have ever heard. This is by no means an exaggeration on my part. Here’s an example of a song that I heard 4 times today. I think it’s by Avril Lavigne.
Hey! Hey! You! You!
I know that you like me
No way! No way!
No it’s not a secret
Hey! Hey! You! You!
I want to be your girlfriend
In a second you’ll be wrapped around my finger
Cause I can, cause I can do it better
There’s no other
So when’s it gonna sink in?
She’s so stupid
What the h*** were you thinking?!
Aside from the lyrics being incredibly bad, the real kicker is there at the end: “Chorus (repeat)”. Every song that they play on that station involves repeating the chorus at least times during the song. Plus, they play the same 15 or so songs repeatedly throughout the morning. It’s like listening to a bad mix CD on repeat. The songs get worse and worse with repeated listening.
I was reading recently about a newer artist named Alexi Murdoch. He is an up and coming Scottish singer-songwriter whose music was featured in the film Garden State (but not on the soundtrack, oddly enough). He decided to take a sample of his music to a record company in hopes of signing on. The executive that he met with took his disc, put it in his computer and proceeded to stare at the counter to see how long it took for the refrain to come on. Murdoch presumed that the longer it took, the slimmer his chance of getting signed. So he decided to take his business elsewhere, opting to release his debut LP independently.
This is what is wrong with popular music today. It’s shoved down the throats of listeners. Those that listen to KDWB are injected with crappy music repeatedly until they are humming the bad chorus to themselves and feel like they like that song. It’s only when they break it down and listen to the crappy, 8th grader lyrics or the relentless promotion of easy sex that they find out the song stinks. Or (worse yet), they never find out.
